Inis Uasal, Lough Currane
Church Island, the Island of the Nobles
Founded by Saint Fionán around the 6th century, this quiet island was once an important monastic sanctuary. Fionán became patron saint of the Iveragh Peninsula — his feast day falls on the 16th of March, and a 17th-century poem credits him with shielding the region from plague.
Step ashore and you'll find the ruins of a Hiberno-Romanesque church, its doorway still standing, along with carved cross slabs — one dedicated to a hermit named Anamchada, who died in 1057. There's even a rare carving of a man playing an early fiddle, echoing figures at Santiago de Compostela.
At the island's far end stands Fionán's Cell, a beehive structure with a narrow passage that aligns with the midwinter sunset — light spilling into its interior, hinting at older rituals woven into the monks' architecture.
